In the course of his existence every man has to confront himself with a number of questions, that arise, because he’ s able to project himself into the future, crossing in this way the historic memory and the conscience of the present.
Where do we have to go and why are we living?
The truth is that we can’t answer these questions. We are under the delusion that our existence is based on stable pillars, while anxiety and anguish are invading and running after us like dogged persecutors.
Always the religion has been the way of flight for the most part of the humanity, the religion, in all its institutional forms, more or less complex and organized, not as a testimonial of faith, but as protection and possible escape from the doubt of death as final act of our existence and of all anguishes that come from it.
It’s exactly here, where the dualism of body and soul arise: the body ends, but the soul will be eternal.
In the Egyptian culture the “soul-doctors” have been the priests; in Greece the philosophers weren’t talking in the function of a divine inspiration, but with the authority of the reason “why” the man remained mortal, and only the divinity enjoyed the immortality. Platon introduced the concept of soul to alleviate the anxious of doubt and to create an alternative for the spiritual development of mankind.
The Enlightment philosophers believed in the same ideas, intensifying the independence of man whether in the political way or in front of superstitions and oppressions of cultural superstructures, in which we grown up without the elaboration of critical judgement.
The Old Testament introduced the concept of clone for the first time.
And it was God who created the mankind in the likeness of him.
Then, because of disobedience, the man has been sentenced to death, but nevertheless he was allowed to save his soul and to protect it in the immortality.
Even Eva had been created with a rib of Adam. So we don’t have to be amazed, that Dolly has been created with a cell of another sheep!
Until the last generation philosophy and psychology, two sides of the same coin, have taken finally completely different and autonomous ways.
The academic psychology has got the dimensions of the natural sciences, and the laboratory become the place, where affermations, always more prerogative for the representatives of the cults, got cultivated dropping the concept of soul.
The science and the progressive knowledge of the answers of all possible questions, for a lot of years the duties of faith, have changed gradually the attitude and behaviour of the western man, always more convinced of the rationalism of the intellegence and the mania of the developments of scientific knowledge which project us into the just foreseen fantasies of the longevity of life or even immortality, the consequence of clonation.
We won’t have to commit the concept of immortality to the soul any more, but it will be possible to live it in the body. Are we crossing the threshold of a new era?
Certainly, yes, even if the fear to step into a new culture, which will progressively throw down the bases of the established ones, will let appear brave defences.
The incapacity to foresee is exactly, what scares us, a fact that the scientific knowledge doesn’t consider, just like Aristoteles declared at his time and with his limits.
The clonation will inevitably change the Man, who will be forced to revise and check the cultural categories in which he lived for a million of years and that nowadays can be surmounted by the scientific knowledge. The “going - too – far” will never be an act of presumption, but a generator of anxiousness, joined to expected risks for the bewaring of cultural stabilities.
In these artworks, we have to lead the attention of the observer on the main themes of the clonation, the irrevocable projection of a special effort, which helps to overcome the concept of death: the panels, where the imagines are inserted, are still representing the cultural and bioethical limit, ascribed to clonation, while the repetition of the representations shows the projection towards the always more perceptible and predicted dream.
The choice of imagines or concepts to clone is extrapolated from the reservoir of the daily life.
The “QUOTIDIE” (every day) becomes the signification of clone and we can fix the moment inside.
